Belonging: The Science of Creating Connection and Bridging Divides

Research-based recommendations for “anyone who wants to bring out the best in themselves and in others through fostering belonging.”

In human beings, the need for belonging is nearly as vital as food and shelter, not just in infancy but throughout our lives. Today, Americans are grappling with “a crisis of belonging,” with 1 in 5 people suffering chronic loneliness, fueled by attributes of modern social life, exacerbated by the pandemic. Dr. Cohen will discuss with Princeton parents and caregivers his new book, hailed as a “masterpiece of social psychology,” providing research-based recommendations for “anyone who wants to bring out the best in themselves and in others, whether at school, home or in the workplace.” Together, we’ll seek to learn how to foster belonging, overcome our differences, create empathy, and forge lasting connections even across divides.

Dr. Geoffrey Cohen, is a Stanford University professor and social psychologist who received his PHD at Stanford and his BA at Cornell. His research examines the processes that shape people’s sense of belonging and self-concept, studying the big and small threats to belonging and self-integrity that people encounter in school, work, communities, and relationships.
